Arizona State men get rematch with Stanford in Pac 12 tournament opener
Arizona State senior basketball standout Kimani Lawrence says when things were tough early this season he thought about the run that Oregon State went on last season. The Beavers finished fifth in the regular season, but unexpectedly went on to win the conference tournament and advance to the NCAA postseason, eventually making it to the Elite Eight.ASU is the No. 8 seed for the Pac 12 tournament, which opens on Wednesday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
How well is ASU playing? Well Colorado, the No. 4 seed, is 7-1 in its last eight games and that loss was to ASU by double digits on its home floor. UCLA is 7-2 in its last nine games and one of those losses was the triple overtime thriller in Tempe. The meeting between ASU and Stanford will be the third between the teams. The first showdown came at Maples Pavilion on Jan. 22 with Stanford prevailing 79-76, the difference being three free throws with a second left after a foul was called on Jalen Graham, who was defending Brandon Angel on a 3-point attempt.
“We’ve got a lot of guys playing well,” Lawrence said. “We’re playing well as a team. We trust each other. A lot of things are going right for us right now and we’re peaking at the right time, so it’s exciting to see what we’re going to do in the tournament.”
