An automated phone system designed to check on residents daily is making the community safer.
The “R U Okay Program” calls enrolled residents each day with an automated message. If participants don’t answer, Westlake dispatch steps in. Captain Jerry Vogel with Westlake Police said on Friday, a team went to check on a woman after she missed her call.
“Officers went there and didn’t see anything going on,” said Vogel. “Didn’t get any answer at the door, so they started talking to the neighbors”. The people next door told police they hadn’t seen the woman. But were able to get the police inside to check on her.Vogel says he’s not sure how long the woman was lying there, but she’s recovering at home. He’s happy that dispatch and his officers acted quickly.Right now, there are about 40 people in the Are You Ok program. But Donna Feorene at Outreach Services says that number should be a lot larger. “Really, anyone who lives alone should think about having this kind of service especially when they are over a certain age,” Feorene said. Feorene is who you’ll call to sign up. She says the people enrolled now live alone and are over the age of 70. But there are no age restrictions.Feorene believes Friday’s save by Westlake police is a great example of why this program works and is needed. “If she had laid there for a long time the outcome would have been far different then just helping her get off the floor,” Feorene said.Ohio drivers warned about ‘puffing’ law ahead of winter stormOff the Leash, Episode 28: Still waiting
