The extreme cold is causing water main breaks throughout Northeast Ohio.

Busy Cedar Road was closed on the South Euclid-University Heights border in between Miramar Boulevard and Wrenford Roads, close to the University Square shopping center for a major water main break. Cedar Road was closed for the majority o the day, but crews told our 19 News team that it should be open by this evening.

“First, you heard this explosion. I look over and it’s just everything is cracked falling apart and the water starts shooting up,” said Andrew Starr, who saw it all happen.“We’ve been letting all the patients know and you know that they can get through even though the streets are blocked off on both sides. Just be careful and come on in, we’re here,” said Dr. Dina Fixler, the owner of University Heights Dental. However, the dentist office’s water was shut off today and they were using purchased water for their patients. “We are using distilled water just to make sure, you know, that everything’s safe. So, you know, we’re doing that. And then, yeah, I’m a little bit worried about what it’s going to be like if this keeps going and it freezes over and it turns into ice,” said Fixler. Due to the extremely cold temperatures, our service area is experiencing a number of water main breaks. Our repair crews, as well as contractors, are working hard to address the breaks as quickly as possible. We prioritize breaks based on several factors, including the severity of the break, number of customers affected, and overall system integrity. Since leaking water can freeze and cause hazardous conditions, we coordinate with local public works departments to apply salt when water from a break is creating a safety concern.
