Apple TV+ continues to excel in the sci-fi genre, with returning favorites like Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and For All Mankind, alongside anticipation for new seasons of Silo, Severance, and Foundation. The sleeper hit Dark Matter, an adaptation of Blake Crouch's novel, has gained critical and audience acclaim and is now rising in popularity, with fans eagerly awaiting a second season. The streamer's success stems from character-driven stories and diverse explorations of the genre.
With a catalog loaded with quality sci-fi for every kind of viewer, Apple TV has firmly claimed the sci-fi lane as its own. Last week saw the return of one of its most ambitious offerings, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and also brought fans an extensive look at Season 5 of its flagship space opera hit, For All Mankind.
There's more to come with new seasons of Silo, Severance, and Foundation, all gearing up to arrive soon. However, beyond these frequent headline-grabbers, the streamer houses a particularly inventive multiversal story that is now breaking through the algorithm for some recognition as anticipation builds for its second chapter. Apple TV's mass appeal in the sci-fi space has come through character-driven dystopian narratives, with Silo and Severance, its most-loved within the space. But it hasn't limited itself to one corner of the genre. In 2024, Apple TV took a swing at the time-travel concept with Dark Matter , an adaptation of a novel by celebrated sci-fi author Blake Crouch, also known for Recursion and Upgrade. The result was a sleek, emotionally driven exploration of identity and fate, with A-list star Joel Edgerton leading the story opposite Jennifer Connelly as his wife. While Dark Matter hasn’t quite reached the breakout heights of some of Apple TV+’s larger tentpoles, that’s hardly a reflection of its quality. In fact, the series stands as one of those rare cases where critics and audiences are in near-total agreement, each awarding it an impressive 81% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. For many, the show deserves a much bigger spotlight, and it might finally be achieving that as it has surged into Apple TV’s Top 10 charts across multiple territories. When Is 'Dark Matter' Season 2 Releasing? Dark Matter could easily have been a limited, one-and-done adaptation, given that its first season covered the entirety of Blake Crouch’s novel. But the execution clearly struck a chord, prompting Apple TV+ to greenlight a second chapter. With no direct source material left to draw from, fans might worry about the creative direction, but Crouch remaining at the helm as series creator should help ensure that the follow-up retains Season 1's DNA. Star Edgerton, in an interview with Collider, teased that the new season will explore “chaos and the dangers of new technology,” calling it"a really relevant topic" in a world racing to unleash innovation without fully considering the consequences. Reassuringly for fans, he also confirmed that the core characters audiences love will return. Production on Season 2 has since kicked off, though Apple TV has yet to set an official return date for the series. Edgerton, however, also teased that Season 2 could likely arrive"middle of the year.” Subscribe to the newsletter for Apple TV sci-fi coverage Explore Apple TV's sci-fi slate more deeply: subscribe to the newsletter for focused coverage and thoughtful analysis of shows like Dark Matter, For All Mankind, Silo and Severance, with context and episode-level insight.
