With the growing number of successful sci-fi series on Apple TV, many fans now regard the platform as the ideal home for the genre. The likes of Foundation, For All Mankind, Silo, Severance, Invasion, and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, among others, contribute to that reputation, consistently dominating TV charts over the years.
Now leading the bunch globally is Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, thanks to its gripping sophomore season, which premiered on February 27, 2026, to conclude in May and already has a spin-off in the works. Created by Chris Black and Matt Fraction, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters premiered on Apple TV+ on November 17, 2023, set after the events of 2014’s Godzilla. Two years later, on November 27, 2025, Apple TV reportedly greenlit a prequel series, which will see Wyatt Russell return as young Lee Shaw. A premiere date has yet to be announced for the sci-fi follow-up, but we have some exciting news regarding production courtesy of the actor himself. "We are shooting it this summer, and I’ve read the scripts," the actor revealed in a recent interview, revealing his anticipation to start working on the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters spin-off. He added: “It is still early days in terms of pre-production, but I’m over-the-moon excited about it. Everybody is…people can get excited about this new wave of storytelling that will come out of the MonsterVerse. While fans await more details about the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ prequel series, Wyatt previously teased what to expect during a recent chat with Collider’s Steve Weintraub. At the time, his father, Kurt Russell , as well as executive producer Tory Tunnell, were present to discuss Season 2."I think people are going to expect one thing and be like, 'Holy sh*t, this is not what I expected,'" Wyatt shared."It'll go deeper into Lee's experience after he came up, and being sort of put on ice, in 1982, and then what happens after that, and why he's needed and the mission he goes on."
