Apple TV's Sci-Fi Blockbuster Has 'Fallout' Running for Shelter With Huge Prime Video Debut

Apple can't seem to contain the sheer magnitude of its sci-fi content. With numerous shows jostling for space on the streamer's viewership charts, the most recent blockbuster is gaining traction via another platform.

Over the years, Apple has made a name for itself as a hub for sci-fi programming, with hits such as Silo, Invasion, Foundation, and the platform-defining blockbuster Severance. More recently, Apple debuted the critically acclaimed series Pluribus, from Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan. However, one show is often overlooked when putting together such lists. The show in question recently returned for a second season and immediately claimed the streamer's viewership crown. Now, it's attracting a larger audience via Prime Video shortly after a big Season 2 debut. We're talking, of course, about Monarch: Legacy of Monsters — Apple's epic, generation-hopping family drama wrapped in a sci-fi spectacle. The show premiered to positive reviews in 2023 and returned for a second season this past February. It is set in the MonsterVerse franchise, one of the few shared universes modeled after the MCU that has actually succeeded. In fact, it's the franchise's first live-action offshoot, following a string of big-screen hits that have grossed more than $2 billion in combined box office revenue worldwide. Monarch features father-son duo Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell as the same character at different ages in two different timelines, along with Shōgun and Pachinko star Anna Sawai. It trails only Guy Ritchie's Young Sherlock and the controversial Melania documentary. Monarch is outperforming blockbuster Prime Video shows such as 56 Days and Fallout, as well as the films The Bluff and The Wrecking Crew. Monarch holds an overall 82% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, with the second season having settled at a"Certified Fresh" 79% score. The website's consensus for the second season reads,"Against all odds, Monarch continues to pack a striking gut-punch of action-drama by embracing its Legacy of Monsters' talent and leading with a cast of rich and complex characters."
