Javier Bardem as Max Cady in Cape Fear

The upcoming ten-episode limited series led by Academy Award winner Javier Bardem, Academy Award nominee Amy Adams, and Golden Globe and Emmy nominee Patrick Wilson and will release this summer. Inspired by both John D.

MacDonald's 1962 novel The Executioners and Martin Scorsese's 1991 film adaptation, Cape Fear re-imagines the story for television with a modern psychological edge. In the trailer released by Apple TV, Bardem takes on the role of Max Cady — originally made famous by Robert De Niro — a convicted killer newly released from prison who is hellbent on revenge against the attorneys responsible for putting him behind bars. Adams and Wilson star as Anna and Tom Bowden, whose quiet life is shattered by Cady's return, setting the stage for a slow-burn psychological battle. The teaser leans heavily into dread, hinting at the unraveling of a seemingly stable family, as the newly released Cady begins to insert himself back into their lives. Unlike the almost mythic figure De Niro played, Bardem's Cady holds an uneasy presence, teased through quick flashes and lingering stares. Complete with a devilish charm, it seems that he's everywhere and nowhere, all at the same time. But what really sticks is the repetition of one chilling line from Cady: "You deserve this." The phrase echoes throughout the trailer, making it clear this isn't just about revenge; there's something far more personal at play. The casting is a key difference from Scorsese's original film, as Bowden's wife becomes a main character this time around, as the fellow attorney involved in Cady's imprisonment. The ensemble cast also includes CCH Pounder, Malia Pyles, Lily Collias, and Joe Anders. At the center of the unraveling Bowden family is Adams' Anna, who looks increasingly shaken with each cut, as she wonders if their family does, in fact, deserve the wrath Cady has coming for them as she begins to question if the former felon knows about "what they did." While that question remains unanswered, the fear in Wilson's Tom, is palpable, as he tries to hold everything together as Cady begins to seep into every part of their lives. And though the original film saw Cady targeting the Bowdens' teenage daughter, Danielle, played by Juliette Lewis, the limited series appears to make Anna and Tom the primary targets. While just a quick first-look, if the trailer is any indication, this version of the Scorsese thriller is doubling down on the psychological angle, with a perfectly eerie Cady, who serves not just as a villain, but as an inescapable force the Bowdens can't seem to outrun. Behind the scenes, Cape Fear is just as stacked as its cast. Created and showrun by The Act's Nick Antosca, the series' pilot will be directed by Academy Award nominee Morten Tyldum, who will also be serving as executive producer on the project. Scorsese, meanwhile, is heading up the show as overall director, with Steven Spielberg, who produced the 1991 film alongside Scorsese, returning, with the pair both earning executive producer credits. Bardem and Adams are also executive producing the project. Cape Fear will debut globally on Apple TV+ on June 5, 2026, launching with two episodes before continuing weekly through July 31.
