Apple TV+ has been the go-to destination for sci-fi, but that isn’t the only programming that has been a hit with fans. Comedy became a calling card for the platform thanks to Ted Lasso, the kindest show on television.

Bill Lawrence and Jason Sudeikis developed the series about an unremarkable American football coach who travels to England to become a manager of a Premier League football club. The comedy lies in the titular character’s culture shock and his inexperience with English football. His insistence on having a positive attitude, however, was just the breath of fresh air that fans needed. This type of comedy filled a need, and Apple TV+ capitalized on it again in Lawrence’s follow-up show, Shrinking. The showrunner co-created the series with Roy Kent himself, Brett Goldstein, who also plays a role in Season 2. With a similar warmth, Shrinking became a sleeper hit in a series about a therapist just trying to get by. Jason Segel portrays Jimmy Laird, said therapist spiraling out of control after the sudden death of his wife. Trying to turn over a new leaf, Jimmy starts a radical form of therapy where he tells his patients exactly what he thinks about their lives. This approach has mixed results, but subsequent seasons of Shrinking are all the better for it. ‘Shrinking’ Evolved With Each Season Shrinking had a concept that could quite easily become stale. Instead, the comedy series pivoted for its sophomore season. Jimmy had spent all of Season 1 moving on from his own mistakes but encouraging his patients to step out of their comfort zones. While this worked for Sean , the veteran living with PTSD, others were not so lucky. One patient, trapped in an emotionally abusive relationship, pushed her husband off a cliff after joking with Jimmy about it in session. This moment validated Shrinking, making it more than an outrageous comedy. Jimmy had to face real-life consequences for his tactics and reconsidered his philosophy with his patients the following season. Consequences are common in the series, which easily balances levity and drama. Brett Goldstein plays one of these consequences in Season 2, as Louis, the drunk driver who caused the accident that killed Jimmy’s wife, Tia. While Season 1 focuses on healing the fractured relationship between Jimmy and his daughter, Alice , Season 2 deals with the residual pain left behind by a tragedy. Louis comes back into Jimmy’s life to apologize for his role in Tia’s death, which is naturally a struggle for the Laird family. Alice and Jimmy eventually come to terms with Louis in their lives, but the same cannot be said for Tia’s best friend, Gaby . To say she is uncomfortable with Louis's presence is an understatement. This becomes such an issue for the character that Goldstein departed the show as a natural progression of the story. Shrinking doesn’t shy away from these real-life difficulties, which is why it resonates so much. Though it features the comedic stylings of Harrison Ford as Jimmy’s gruff but hilarious boss, Paul, and the incomparable Christa Miller, Shrinking is ultimately a series about grief. The show evolves with the characters each season, making it one of Apple TV+’s more underrated series. Related Collider Acrostic — The Collider TV Quiz!
