He argues that computing privacy is dependent on data processing occurring solely on the user's device. Johnson believes that users should have the autonomy to decide their level of risk tolerance regarding privacy violations. He expressed concerns that a software bug could potentially expose user data to malicious actors, despite Apple's claims of encryption and IP address shielding. Apple maintains that the data used for “Enhanced Visual Search” is encrypted and user IP addresses are concealed, preventing Apple from gleaning information from the photos. Users can disable “Enhanced Visual Search” on their iPhones by navigating to Settings >Apps >Photos and toggling the feature off. On Macs, users can disable it by opening the Photos app, going to Settings >General, and toggling the feature off
