While the iPhone remains the star, Apple is turning the spotlight toward a younger cast of products in its hunt for growth. Follow our live coverage of the company's September event:
Apple released new AirPods in March with wireless charging, but Bloomberg has reported that the company is working on updated versions with water resistance and noise-cancellation capabilities that could debut this week.
New AirPods would help Apple offset declining iPhone sales. In the most recent quarter ended in June, sales of AirPods helped Apple beat Wall Street’s revenue projections, growing an estimated 70% from the prior year to approach $2 billion on about 10 million AirPods sold, according to Sanford C. Bernstein.
The wireless earbuds have become so popular that they far outpace the Apple Watch in sales—even though they were released more than a year after the smartwatch debuted. Apple is forecast to sell 50 million AirPods this calendar year compared with 18 million watches, estimates Loup Ventures, a venture-capital firm specializing in research.
Critics could argue Apple didn’t come by all these sales honestly. After all, it removed the headphone jack from iPhone models starting in 2016, driving people to upgrade to devices that required a dongle to connect existing headphones.
