Apple has released a fix for MacBook Air and Pro models with M-series chips that automatically turn on when you open the lid or connect them to power. The fix requires users to enter a specific command in the Terminal app, offering a workaround for the automatic startup behavior.
Apple unveiled its earnings report for the December quarter (Q1 FY2025) on Thursday, reporting record revenue of $124.30 billion. Alongside its financial results, Apple also addressed a long-standing issue that has bothered MacBook users for years. MacBook Air and Pro models equipped with Apple 's M-series chips automatically power on when you open the lid or connect them to a power source. This behavior is unavoidable.
Furthermore, Macs will initiate startup upon either action, which can be particularly inconvenient when charging. MacBooks with Apple silicon already boast excellent battery life, but connecting them to a USB-C or MagSafe cable would trigger them to turn on, even if you don't intend to use the computer during charging. You'd have to manually put it back to sleep or completely shut it down. Fortunately, Apple has released a fix for this issue, although it doesn't come in the form of a simple toggle switch within the Settings app. Instead, users have to navigate to the Terminal app and manually enter a specific code, precisely as outlined by Apple in a support document. This procedure is applicable only to Macs with Apple silicon running macOS Sequoia or a later version. Before attempting it, ensure your Mac is updated to the latest available software. After updating, open the built-in Terminal app and execute one of the following commands, depending on your desired behavior:* To prevent startup when opening the lid or connecting to power: sudo nvram BootPreference=%00* To prevent startup only when opening the lid: sudo nvram BootPreference=%01* To prevent startup only when connecting to power: sudo nvram BootPreference=%02Upon typing (copying and pasting is recommended) the command, Terminal will prompt you to enter your administrator password. Type it accurately and press Return. Note that Terminal does not display your password. For users familiar with Terminal, these commands pose no difficulty. However, the process might seem more complex for those who haven't previously used the app. Apple provides the following Terminal command for reversing any of the above steps and re-enabling automatic startup when opening the lid or connecting to power: sudo nvram -d BootPreference. Again, it would be significantly more user-friendly if Apple incorporated toggles for these settings within the Mac's Settings app. Hopefully, Apple will implement this improvement in the near future
