You may be wondering why the Alabama GOP hasn’t figured out a way to put this Tommy Tuberville residency status thing to rest. But Tuberville pulled so much of the vote when he ran for U.S. Senate, that there may not be a lot of political will to nitpick the rules as he seems the favorite to become governor.
If you have more political stroke than the whole state party, I presume you might not have to show your cards -- or tax returns -- before being rubber-stamped. But as the ’26 campaigns swing into action, efforts are underway to scrutinize the rules a bit more -- and Tuberville isn’t the only candidate facing a technical challenge.that former GOP state lawmaker Gil Isbell has filed a complaint with the state GOP, arguing that Wahl doesn’t meet the residency requirement to run for lieutenant governor.Isbell points out that Wahl presented a Tennessee driver license during a 2023 traffic stop and that he had been registered to vote in Tennessee while serving as Alabama’s state party chair. Both of those things have previously been Whitmire also reported a few years ago that Wahl had used an unusual Alabama ID card -- one that was made by former state auditor Jim Zeigler and said “Regional Press Secretary, The Office of State Auditor.” Ziegler has said it was not a fake ID but one he had approved because Wahl needed it to do volunteer work for the state auditor’s office.A national civil-rights lawyer announced that Tuskegee University’s men’s basketball coach is considering his legal options after he was handcuffed in a postgame incident at Morehouse College in Atlanta, The lawyer, Harry Daniels, said in a press release that the coach, Benjy Taylor, was reacting to Morehouse football players joining their basketball team on the court and “acting aggressively” toward the Tuskegee players. The release said that Taylor asked police officers to remove the football players, per Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rules. It claims that Taylor was trying to “diffuse an increasingly dangerous situation” but that an officer handcuffed Taylor and took him off the court.Mardi Gras or not, the arctic blast affected Alabama all the way down to the Gulf over the weekend, even leading to the cancelation of at least a couple of Mardi Gras-season parades.that, before the most extreme cold of the year so far moved in, Mobile kicked off its ’26 Mardi Gras parade season before an estimated crowd of more than 67,500. The Conde Cavaliers held down their spot as Downtown Mobile’s season-opening headliner with a “Wild Wild West” theme. The Senior Bowl Players Parade took place as well on Friday. Can you shout “Laissez les bons temps rouler” while you’re catching a shivering chill?Tuskegee Buildings, Codes and Inspections Department 9%This person formally filed a challenge with the Alabama GOP over whether Tommy Tuberville satisfies state law regarding his residency status as someone running for governor. The Alabama High School Athletic Association is making this major change in their school classificationsMaking teams with the most NIL money compete up a class 2%Declaring Thompson High football the only program in the new Class 9A 4%I really know only two things about groundhogs: They’re chubby, according to the Alabama song, and they usually seem to predict six more weeks of winter. Of course, even folks with a non-rodent central nervous system know that if it’s Feb. 2, we probably have six more weeks of winter. A locally famous possum at the Birmingham Zoo scooped the Punxsutawney woodchuck on Sunday. Birmingham Jill -- that’s the possum with the power --That means six more weeks of winter, which didn’t set right with attendees or people who’ve read about Jill’s shadow. So I would suggest Jill stay out of the zoo parking lot until at least April Fool’s Day.We’d appreciate it if you’d take a short survey on what you like about “Down in Alabama” and what you might like to hear on it.
