The Speranza Animal Rescue in Cumberland County is gearing up for the holiday season-- hoping to find loving homes for animals in need. The organization helps hundreds of animals every year, including Beans, a dog who was given a better chance at life.
"He had pretty severe glaucoma... both of his eyes had to be removed. Beans is around 3 to 4 years old, he's very sweet, he's dressed up like a turkey today and will be available for adoption," said Ashley Maurice, a Speranza Board Member and dog coordinator. Aside from dogs, the rescue is home to several cows, horses, chickens, goats, and a camel named Sir Camelot. Animals at Speranza come to the rescue in critical need, and are often found in the worst of conditions. One of those is Jeremy-- a German shepherd who the rescue say they saved from a dangerous living situation in Carlisle. "Some of the dogs come in absolutely defeated and they end up doing amazing-- and getting to see them in a home is probably the most rewarding thing," said Maurice. This holiday season the rescue has several fundraisers planned, and they’re looking for things like dog food, toys, and cleaning supplies. And if you're looking to welcome a furry friend to your family this holiday season-- the rescue is asking potential families to remember that an animal is a long term choice. "An animal is a lifetime commitment so however long they're going to live that's your commitment to them, and that is what you should remember when taking them in," said Maurice.
