Ryan Gosling's Ryland smiling at Rocky while in his space suit in the tunnel in Project Hail Mary
Before Project Hail Mary blasted off into theaters, one of the directors made sure to tie up one of the film's loose ends. Ryan Gosling's new movie is a film adaptation of the Andy Weir novel The Martian.
Like most adaptations, the movie removes moments and details from the book that are non-essential to the plot. Without these edits, the film, which already has a two and a half hour run time, would need an intermission. However, some of these details are too important to Weir for them to be removed completely — so, the film hid one detail in an Easter egg, according to Slash Film. After the Project Hail Mary mission was launched, the situation on Earth got worse as survival became difficult because of climate change. The world turned against Eva Stratt, played by Sandra Hüller, who led the mission. Even though multiple governments worked together to launch Project Hail Mary, Stratt became the scapegoat, and she was sentenced to life in prison. Moviegoers won't see any of this happen because it only occurred in the book, but an Easter egg was added at the request of Weir to explain Stratt's fate. Director Phil Lord said,"So one of the things that we kept trying to cram into the movie and just didn't stick was this idea that after Grace went off to space, people did not cooperate." Viewers can look out for a tattoo that shows she's been in prison for life. The film's other director, Chris Miller, explained the significance of the tattoo that can be seen in the final scene back on Earth. The tattoo is a V, which stands for life, with a line in it showing she is not eligible for parole. Miller said,"So thought that she had gone to prison without parole, but then had broken out of prison from her connections, and then was sort of on the lam, trying to still trying to save the world." It was Weir's idea to include the tattoo to complete Stratt's storyline. He added,"The way that you make a movie feel like the world is rich is having like these little secret stories that there's like a little bit of evidence for that doesn't fully make sense ... But you know that there's more there." Project Hail Mary was released in theaters on March 20, 2026.
