A tiny house village for homeless seniors has opened in Anchorage

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Residents have begun to move into six tiny homes set up in the corner of the Central Lutheran Church parking lot in Anchorage.Board President Julie Greene-Graham said the project has been a learning experience — though carefully screened, the first three residents who arrived in December were ultimately asked to leave after they were unable to follow rules designed to protect both the residents and the community.

Currently, three people are living in the tiny home community as well as one dog. All of them arrived just weeks ago, including Mark Henderstein, who said he was thrilled to be out of the shelters and finally in a place where he could lock his door. Greene-Graham said residents must agree to work with case managers, which she said were the only paid positions in the program. The expectation is that people will stay 6 to 9 months, but with housing options limited, finding permanent housing could take longer and the program will be flexible.
