The Anchorage Election Commission rejected more than a 1,000 ballots cast in the municipal election due to unresolved issues.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Anchorage election officials finished their final count of votes from the April 2 election on Tuesday following a session of public canvass.
The process was not without some concerns. A total of 602 ballots were because of signatures that didn’t match. Some members of the Election Commission expressed concern that ballots may have been rejected simply because signatures on the ballot envelope didn’t match those on record with the state, but may have been valid signatures.
“Today we rejected 1,087 votes. I would say that almost all of them were legitimate,” Treadwell said. “A couple of them were probably voted by people for their kids away at college, that’s illegal, but others were rejected unfortunately just simply because people filled it out wrong.” Municipal Election Administrator William Northrop said the 602 people whose ballots were rejected because of signature issues received a letter in the mail telling them how to fix the issue, but none of them responded.
