Adam Grove, ND, is raising awareness on traumatic brain injuries through a project called the Alaska Brain Bus - a 1967 motorhome equipped to help diagnose the often overlooked injury.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - It‘s currently parked on Adam Grove ’s property in South Anchorage, but a 1967 Blue Bird Wanderlodge is wrapping up its second tour of the state of Alaska as part of a campaign designed to raise awareness of traumatic brain injuries.

According to Grove, TBIs often go misdiagnosed or undiagnosed by clinicians because they often take more time to diagnose than clinicians are able to give a patient. “We dragged it up here and spent, oh, probably a year-and-a-half, two years, getting it into shape,” Grove recalled. “Then we hit the road.”The Brain Bus made its first tour around the state last year, making appearances in Homer, Seward, Delta Junction, Fairbanks, and Talkeetna this past summer.

“If there‘s gaps — which there are tons of — then we‘re like, okay, how can we get resources into that community to fill that gap?” Grove said. “If ... providers need training, maybe they need some resources, maybe need a grant to do this or that, then that’s what we try to do.”
