That early version of the proposal saw major opposition, with some expressing concern that simplification could mean fewer protections in place for certain neighborhoods, and potential adverse effects on property values. Supporters maintain the new version will create flexibility in the current code while providing more opportunities for housing.
Midtown resident Donovan Camp pointed to an instance in which several of his friends moved from Fairbanks and struggled to find housing in Anchorage. Still, there were still many who strongly opposed the ordinance. Eleanor Andrews, who said she was involved in helping create multiple Anchorage housing developments, said rezoning in Anchorage will not make housing affordable.
