The Anchorage animal shelter has temporary halted dog intakes and adoptions due to wave of canine parvovirus infections.
Anchorage’s animal shelter has temporarily stopped accepting dogs after several animals tested positive for the highly contagious parvovirus.after two dogs tested positive for the virus on Tuesday.
Shelter spokesman Joel Jorgensen said Friday that a total of three dogs tested positive for parvo and had to be euthanized because the shelter does not have a designated quarantine area or staff to do 24-hour monitoring. In the meantime, the shelter is encouraging people who find stray dogs to use social media to try to track down the owners, or websites to look up dog license tags or microchip numbers. Jorgensen said current owners looking to surrender their dogs should also use social media or
it spreads among dogs through contact with infected dogs, their feces or contaminated objects. Puppies are most susceptible from the ages of six weeks to six months, with several breeds including Doberman pinschers, German shepherds, Labrador retrievers and Rottweilers also at elevated risk.
