Share to twitterThe San Francisco 49ers used the past couple days to cut their roster down from 90 to 53 heading into next weekend’s regular season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Below, we look at the 49ers’ 53-man roster as it currently stands with some in-depth analysis and list out the team’s practice squads with updates throughout the process. For now, the 49ers have decided to roster three quarterbacks. However, look for either Mullens or Beathard to be traded. Garoppolo showing himself to be 100 percent healthy in his two preseason appearances didn’t cause the 49ers to flinch. Despite what we had speculated, head coach Kyle Shanahan and Co.
The shocking thing here is that San Francisco decided to keep four tight ends. Stanford products Kaden Smith and Levine Toilolo fill out a deep tight end rotation. Though, we can’t expect all four to be active on game day. That leaves open the possibility of waiving Smith or Toilolo in short order. Interestingly, the additional receiver is Kendrick Bourne. He was clearly on the roster bubble heading into Saturday’s cuts. Instead, the 49ers moved on from veteran Jordan Matthews after it seemed he was a lock to earn a spot on the 53. To be clear, this is a deep receiving class for the 49ers. Goodwin is slated to be the No. 1 option. After that, expect youngsters Deebo Samuel and Dante Pettis to battle for reps on the outside with Taylor as the top slot guy once he returns.
Defensive Line: Dee Ford, DeForest Buckner, Solomon Thomas, Nick Bosa, Sheldon Day, Ronald Blair, Arik Armstead, D.J. A starting group consisting of Greenlaw, Warner and Alexander will be a force.
