To Doctor Who fans, the name Toby Whithouse shouldn't be unfamiliar. Having penned seven episodes of the hit sci-fi series, primarily in the Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi eras, Whithouse is best remembered for his David Tennant-led episode"School Reunion," regularly cited as one of the best episodes of the first two seasons of the revived series.
However, Whithouse's catalog is full of much more than just episodes of timey-wimey adventure, with one of his most underrated projects reaching surprising streaming heights in the U.S. The Red King, a British crime drama created and written by Whithouse, is the unlikely addition to the current top ten most-streamed titles on AMC+ in the U.S. At the time of writing, the series, which stars Bodyguard's Anjli Mohindra, is the third most-streamed title on the platform, and is outperforming a selection of high-profile other names. Most notable of the lot is The Walking Dead: Dead City, with the horror spin-off ranked just eighth in the top ten. Elsewhere, Nautilus is at #10, the Turkish film Baskin is at #9, the found-footage horror movie House on Eden is at #7, and the 2011 period drama Pan Am is at #6. Fragments of Antonin kicks off the top 5, Sean Byrne's Dangerous Animals is at #4, The Red King, of course, is at #3, with Night of the Reaper at #2, and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon at #1. What Other Shows Are Currently Popular on Streaming? In the U.S., the most notable chart-topping series is likely still Prime Video's The Summer I Turned Pretty, with the huge hit based on Jenny Han's original novel trilogy storming to the top of everyone's watchlist for its recent third season. So successful has it been that a feature film finale has been greenlit to capitalize on the popularity. Over on Netflix, a fascinating Toni Collette performance is topping the charts with Wayward, and, on HBO, Brad Ingelsby's new crime drama Task also continues to dominate.
