The family of José Ibarra Bucio wants to know why ICE officials had him handcuffed to a bed while in a coma with guards around him at all hours.
Melissa Castro holds a photo of her husband, José Ibarra Bucio, who had been held at the Adelanto detention center and died weeks after he was taken to a local hospital.
Ibarra’s family says they are now desperate to know exactly what happened to the one-time delivery driver while he was in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody. ICE spokeswoman Lori Haley said Ibarra was taken into custody after he was released from prison. He was convicted last year of a felony for fleeing a pursuing peace officer while driving recklessly, she said.
On Feb. 22, about two weeks after he was taken to the hospital, Ibarra was released from ICE custody, “on an order of recognizance with respect to humanitarian concerns,” Haley said. In 2017, immigrant advocates raised alarms about conditions at the facility following the deaths of three detainees in three months.at the facility in less than one year.
