A Pew Research Center study reveals that Americans frequently encounter AI-related content while browsing the web, even if it is not the primary focus of the page. While most users encounter AI in a superficial manner, the study highlights the growing integration of AI into the online experience and emphasizes the need for AI literacy.
A new study by the Pew Research Center has shed light on how Americans are encountering artificial intelligence (AI) while browsing the web. The researchers examined approximately 2.5 million web page visits from a cohort of 900 participants who granted access to their browsing data for an entire month. The findings reveal that while most individuals encountered AI-related content, much of it involved only brief or superficial mentions.
The study acknowledged limitations in its tracking methodology, including the inability to monitor all web-connected devices used by participants and the exclusion of real-time algorithmically curated content on social media platforms or password-protected websites. Despite these limitations, the study found that nearly all participants (over 90%) visited at least one page containing a mention of AI, even if it was incidental or unrelated to the page's main subject. Approximately half of the participants visited a page where AI was the central theme of the content, but these visits were not frequent. Around 60% of participants viewed a search engine page, such as Google, displaying an AI-generated summary of search results. Only 10% of participants actively searched for AI-related terms
