The doomed American Eagle Flight 5342 , en route from Wichita, Kansas, to Ronald Reagan National Airport, collided with the Army helicopter, killing all 60 passengers and four crew members. The Black Hawk helicopter, carrying three soldiers, also perished in the crash.
The Pentagon withheld the names of the soldiers on board the helicopter, but Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that the crew was 'fairly experienced,' including a woman. Meanwhile, the airline, American Eagle, has yet to release the names of its crew members.The tragedy has unfolded amidst a frantic search and rescue operation, quickly turning into a grim recovery effort. The nationalities and backgrounds of the victims are beginning to emerge, painting a heartbreaking picture of loss. Among the passengers were more than a dozen individuals returning home after participating in the 2025 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas. This included young skaters Spencer Lane and Jinna Han, both 16, and their mothers, Christine Lane and Jin Han. The Skating Club of Boston in Norwood, Massachusetts, confirmed that three individuals affiliated with their club perished in the crash. The victims also include Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, legendary figure skaters who had coached young talents at the Boston skating club. The couple had won a world championship in pairs figure skating in 1994 and competed in two Olympic games. Their son, Maxim Naumov, had competed in Wichita and had already returned home on an earlier flight. They were also members of the Plumbers, Pipefitters and Steamfitters Local 602, a labour union based in the Washington area. Five members of the union, along with two members of the Communication Workers of America's Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, were on board the ill-fated flight. The Communication Workers of America expressed their grief over the loss of their members. The crash marks the first commercial plane crash in the United States since 2009
