Amazon says it will close its Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh physical stores as it shifts its grocery strategy toward faster delivery and expanded investment in Whole Foods Market. In a company news release, Amazon said the decision follows a review of its Amazon-branded grocery stores, noting that while there were “encouraging signals,” the company had not yet found a customer experience and economic model that could scale effectively.
Some of the closing locations will be converted into Whole Foods Market stores. Customers will still be able to shop Amazon Fresh online in areas where delivery is available. The move comes as Amazon doubles down on grocery delivery, which the company says is seeing strong customer demand. Amazon now delivers groceries in more than 5,000 U.S. cities and towns, including through Same-Day Delivery, which added fresh and frozen foods in 2025. According to the company, sales of perishables through that service have grown sharply, and it plans to expand same-day grocery delivery to more communities in 2026. At the same time, Amazon is increasing its investment in Whole Foods Market, which it acquired in 2017. Whole Foods has grown to more than 550 locations and has seen significant sales and traffic gains, according to the release.
