Alvin's JB Hensler College and Career Academy opens new $183K lab for dental program
has opened a lab for its dental program in which students get hands-on training using dental chairs, X-ray machines, lab equipment and a sterilization center.
A $183,000 matching grant from the Texas Workforce Commission's High Demand Job Training Program covered everything program participants could need — including mannequins for practice — to transform the classroom into what any local dentist office looks like, said Shiny George, the academy's dental assistant program instructor."Alvin ISD is going to produce an incredible dental employee base for our local dental offices," George said in a press release.
Participants in the matching grant included Texas Workforce Solutions-Gulf Coast Workforce Board and the Manvel Economic Development Corp. Students have been using the new equipment since February as the last steps of the renovation were completed, George said.Program participants can complete clinical rotations at dental offices in Manvel, which has been essential in helping them receive registered dental assistant certification, said Carolyn Paloski, the school's college and career advisor.
At the April 27 dedication ceremony for the lab, 15 program participants received their registered dental assistant certification, which will allow them to begin their careers immediately and give them a headstart on any future plans for dental education.

‘My career of 280 years’: Biden jokes off 2024 age concernsAs Joe Biden, the oldest president in U.S. history, embarks on his reelection campaign, he is increasingly musing aloud about his advanced age, cracking self-deprecating jokes and framing his decades in public life as a plus. He is hoping to convince voters his age is an asset rather than a vulnerability. He says he's served in the Senate for 270 years and says the fourth U.S. president is a good friend. The octogenarian president’s comments about his age can also be serious, often used to underscore a broader point. It’s a strategy that evokes how then-President Ronald Reagan defused questions about his age — then 73 — during the 1984 campaign.
