After competing in three Olympic trials as an 800-meter runner, Rose Monday ascended to the highest level of coaching, earning Hall of Fame induction.
Olympic Head Coach of the women's track and field team, Rose Monday pictured with runners during training in San Antonio in 2020. As Bob Beamon stood on the medal stand celebrating his gold in the long jump at the 1968 Olympics, 9-year-old Rose Monday watched on television with tears streaming down her face. The ambition sparked a decorated career as both an athlete and coach, highlighted by a role as the head of the U.S. women’s track and field team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
“I was just blown away. Honestly, it’s not anything that’s ever been on my radar, or I ever thought something like that would be possible,” Monday said. “You don't do it to win an award or to be inducted into a hall of fame. You don’t even think of that. You do the best you can and work hard, and next thing you know, you’re a three-time Olympic coach.”
“I went in with confidence that I could do it, and I know that I have the ability to stay calm in a highly pressurized situation,” Monday said. “You don’t leave any stone unturned going in, and sometimes you’re lacking sleep, and you just want to be there for the athletes. It’s the biggest moment in their lives, and you want to make sure everything is done right.”
“Because I hadn’t made an Olympic team, I discounted all of the things I had done. But in that moment, I had an epiphany,” Monday said. “‘Don’t do that, Rose. Be thankful for all of these. They’ve all been wonderful opportunities.’ When I did that, I can swear everything just came tenfold toward me.”
