Alpine F1 boss only learned Fernando Alonso signed to Aston from the press release.
The outlet reports that Szafnauer believed that Alpine was on the precipice of securing a deal with Alonso. The team and the former champion had been deep in negotiations, which the team boss thought were looking good. But following up on the rumors, he says he did question Alonso.
“So yes, the first confirmation I had was the press release. I did ask the question [to Alonso]. And I was told: 'No, no, I haven't signed anything.' So I was a bit surprised," he said, according toThe 41-year-old driver joined Alpine in 2021 after a two-year hiatus from competing in Formula One.
