He was reportedly wearing camouflage tactical gear, helmet and a gas mask.
Grant, the wounded deputy, underwent surgery at Natividad Medical Center in Salinas and is recovering, said the county’s chief communications officer, Nick Pasculli. Grant is 40 years old and has been with the department 17 years.
Pasculli said he was not at liberty to say which law enforcement agency’s return fire killed the suspect. In addition to the sheriff’s office and Salinas police, there were officers on scene from the FBI, the California Highway Patrol and other agencies from Monterey and Santa Cruz counties.
