Being one of the greatest and most iconic superheroes of all time, Superman has been flying across visual media for decades now. So far, a good handful of actors have played the Big Blue Boy Scout in live-action on both movies and TV shows.
While all could be considered pretty decent at the very least, there are some incredible performances for the character over the years that really blew everyone away. Whether they be from movies or television, it's hard to compare the best of the best—all talented in unique and special ways—but if one had to, some Superman actors stand out above the others. Flying from universe to universe makes it fun to compare and contrast how each Man of Steel was great and changed the game uniquely, especially with James Gunn's Superman finally being out. This list will rank every Superman actor based on how well they brought the character to life, how well they represented his ideas, and the story they received to support their portrayals. Such is the case for Dean Cain, consistently bringing topics like"woke culture" up and pushing conservative political views through his connection to the character. Fans don't appreciate Cain taking advantage of the Superman mantle to push his views, which has tainted the general view of him. Public reception aside, Dean Cain gave a pretty decent performance in a pretty well-liked show. There was nothing necessarily bad about his portrayal, but nothing really special either. He is also greatly out-acted by his Lois Lane, Teri Hatcher. So, when looking at him compared to the other actors that came before and after him, Cain falls a bit short. There are enough evil Supermen across media right now — the world doesn't need one in real life. While Kirk Alyn's Superman isn't anything really amazing and pretty dated because studios simply didn't have the technology to truly bring him to life in the '40s, he still gets a ton of points for what he's done for the character. Alyn starred in the 1948 black-and-white film simply titled Superman, which depicted the origins of the Kryptonian and features him going toe-to-toe with a new villain simply known as the Spider Lady . While not too great of a movie, Superman still allowed Alyn to give his all to the role and defined the character's presence in live-action as a whole. Poland Powered by Expand Collapse 7 Brandon Routh 'Superman Returns' and the Arrowverse The story of Brandon Routh's journey as Superman is quite interesting. In 2006, he had the massive job of following Christopher Reeve's beloved portrayal of Superman. While there were a few actors who took up the mantle post-Reeve era, Superman Returns was intended to"return" to the Reeve universe of movies and be a sequel/soft reboot. Thus, Routh had to play someone else's Superman. He did so gracefully and respectfully, but this approach didn't allow him to really flourish as he could have. However, Routh still gives a great performance, bringing one of the coolest Superman movie moments of all time when he catches a plane before it lands on a football field. He'd get a chance to flourish many years later when CW's Arrowverse decided to adapt the Crisis on Infinite Earths comic book storyline across their multiple shows, bringing in many multiversal cameos. While Routh is playing the same version of the character he did in Superman Returns, so much has happened since then that he gets to make the character his own, becoming more like the Superman from the"Kingdom Come" comic book story. Despite being in movies that aren't typically well-received, Cavill brought his iteration of Superman to life with grace and genuine talent, doing the best with the material he got. However, his portrayal doesn't get as many points simply because he's far different from the typical version of Superman, which is more lighthearted. Cavill is definitely talented and gives such a great performance despite his version's admitted limitations; some of his best moments come in the big crossover film, Zack Snyder's Justice League, where he shines despite having only a few scenes and even fewer dialogues. So much respect has to go to Cavill for taking something controversial and absolutely killing the role. He was so good that many were genuinely petitioning for him to be the Superman in the new DCU, and it would've been well-deserved. We will forever wonder what could've been had Cavill gotten different material, because for all intents and purposes, he is Superman ripped from the comic book page. That means he had 104 chances to show off his skill to play the character, statistically giving him way more great moments than anyone else. While Adventures of Superman was simply a fine show, limited by the constraints of its times, George Reeves still brought a consistent performance that captured the Man of Steel's essence accurately. Aside from his acting, Reeves also has one of the best and most comic-accurate on-screen Superman costumes of all time. It feels almost unfair how many chances Reeves had to kill it on the TV screen. He perfectly captured the lovable, honest, sweet, caring, and heroic qualities of Superman and won the hearts of pretty much everyone. The performance made his Superman interesting from the get-go, which was a challenge, considering how divided popular opinion is about the character. It's very clear that just like his director, James Gunn, Corenswet cares a lot about this character and is determined to bringing him to life in a way that honors his roots from the comic books. Having so much passion for the character does a lot for Corenswet's performance and gives him a genuine sort of feeling that makes him feel honest in his portrayal. Considering he just debuted in the role and already excelled so much, it's not out of the question to think that Corenswet might very well become the defining version of Superman in a few years. 3 Tom Welling 'Smallville' Much like George Reeves, Tom Welling has a huge advantage thanks to being on television. Playing young Clark Kent for 217 episodes, Welling started his tenure on Smallville already strong and only continued to get better as the show evolved and matured. He got to play a Clark in high school, going through a plethora of scenarios that other Supermen never had on-screen. Getting to play mostly only Clark Kent, as he's yet to take up the Superman mantle during the series, allowed Welling to bring out some raw moments for the character. Many actors have to deal with tackling both the Clark and Superman personas, but Welling got to focus solely on the young man, and that gave him some amazing and valuable time to hone his skills as the Last Son of Krypton. Starring in the series started by Superman: The Movie in 1978, Reeve is the man who defined what a live-action Superman should look and act like. For a gigantic proportion of the Superman fanbase—and fans of superheroes in general—he is the epitome of a good Superman. While his final two movies weren't too great, he still gave phenomenal performances regardless. No matter what he had to do, even in the absurd Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, Reeve did it well. The late actor had palpable and honest chemistry with his Lois Lane, Margot Kidder, that made his love for her a joy to watch, as it was truly believable. Most notably, though, Reeve brings a perfect contrast between the Clark Kent and Superman personas. He plays a clumsy Clark with style and the heroic Superman with confidence. Superman & Lois is commonly heralded as one of the best pieces of superhero content across television and movies, bringing Superman into a status quo he hasn't been in throughout television or movies: a father. Indeed, Superman & Lois is unique yet so true to the heart and soul of the hero. Dealing with scenarios like his wife, Lois Lane , suffering through cancer, and his son, Jordan Kent , getting powers, Tyler Hoechlin brings the most honest and real interpretation of the Man of Steel to date. It also brings him back to his hometown of Smallville, which is a main setting that he hasn't had since Smallville in 2001. Hoechlin's Superman is caring, lovable, brave, and an incredible father. It truly doesn't get much better than Tyler Hoechlin's iteration of this iconic hero.
