The Alabama Department of Transportation is preparing to keep roadways safe and open during the incoming winter weather.
With the heavier snowfall expected south of Interstate 20, ALDOT is planning pretreatments across the state and will start clearing and treatment operations when snowfall begins.
ALDOT personnel continue to watch the forecasts so that pretreatments can be applied at the right time. If rain falls before the snow, it could wash away the pretreatment, making timing important. Some pretreatment will begin as early as Saturday evening, but most is planned for Sunday and Monday. Crews will also prioritizes bridges and interstate highways first, followed by U.S. and state highways based on traffic.
ALDOT warns that even with these safety measures in place, roads can still become dangerous. Drivers are encouraged to take extra precautions when driving in winter weather:Slow down and leave plenty of space between you and the car in front of you. Be aware of black ice, a thin, invisible layer of ice on the road, that often forms on bridges and overpasses.Keep your headlights on to improve visibility.Be on the lookout for road hazards and emergency crews.First Alert: Tracking rain & rumbles overnight into Saturday morningGen Z TikTok users react to TikTok ban
