The calendar may say it’s early September, but Alaskans are feeling the holiday spirit already as the official U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree makes its way from Alaska.

earlier this year, residents in Alaska will also have the chance to spruce up the tree before it goes up in D.C.

The goal is to make 10,000 weatherproof ornaments that vary in size from nine to 12 inches. They are about a third of the way there with a deadline of Sept. 30 to submit. The Forest Service said it’s okay if some can’t make it to an organized event — they can connect with family and friends and make ornaments at home.

Deadline extended to Sept. 30! 🚨 You now have more time to send in your uniquely Alaskan ornaments for the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree. 🎄 So far, we’ve received 3,279 beautiful ornaments, but we still need 6,721 more to reach our goal. Can’t make it to our next event? That’s okay! You can still get involved in the fun.
