Alaska is experiencing a warm December, but many areas are expected to see dry and cold conditions to end the year. Warmer weather will return in the new year, but snow is unlikely. Kodiak may see rain and wind.
Despite a warm December for most parts of Alaska, many Alaskans can expect dry and cold conditions on the final day of 2024. Anchorage will officially end the year within the top 10 warmest December’s on record, while Fairbanks will close the month within the top 20th. This stretch of weather looks to linger through the next week before warmer weather builds back in across the state.
We’ll likely still see a significant departure for snow in Southcentral, as highs are set to climb back above freezing.Clear, cold and dry conditions are evident this morning. While some cloud coverage will remain for coastal regions, little precipitation will fall. For locations that do see it, expect only spotty activity, with the best chance occurring for coastal regions of the Kenai. Low pressure building northward out of the Pacific means Kodiak could see up to an inch of rain and wind gusts as high as 50 mph. The overall trend remains fairly chilly through the first few days of 2025, with a slow warming trend as we welcome in the first full week of January. If you’re a fan of sunshine, there will be plenty in the forecast; if you’re a fan of snow; don’t get your hopes up as our snow drought remains. Starting late next week, slow warming will build back across Southcentral as highs inch up toward freezing. Depending on the temperature profile of the atmosphere, we could see some areas of rain/snow/freezing rain as moisture moves back into the region.A fairly quiet weather pattern will persist the rest of this week. While some light precipitation is possible for far southern reaches of the panhandle, most locations will remain dry and sunny.
