Alaska will experience a stormy weekend with high wind warnings issued for various coastal areas. Daylight hours will begin to increase after the winter solstice on Saturday.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Alaska is going to see some changes through the weekend. First, winter solstice occurs at 12:20 am Saturday. Daylight lengths will start to increase on Sunday. The Gulf of Alaska will be like a super highway for storms over the weekend. The Pacific lows will get caught in the circulation over the gulf and become part of the easterly flow affecting southern coastal Alaska . A high wind warning will start Saturday for the Bering Strait Coast and St. Lawrence Island.
Northeast winds 35-45, gusting to 70 mph, and further north, near Point Hope and the Noatak Valley will see a warning for strong winds begin early Sunday. Southwest’s Kuskokwim Delta could see a challenging combination of strong winds, up to 35 mph, with freezing rain, sleet, ice glaze and even snow
