Alamo Heights aims for third straight UIL Class 5A girls golf state championship.
Alamo Heights senior Jordan Sandoval is absorbing every moment while she can. They make her both happy and sad at the same time. The most jarring occurred nearly two weeks ago as she approached the 18th hole during the second round of the Region IV-5A girls golf championships at Champion Lakes Golf Course in McAllen.
“I kind of felt very emotional,” Sandoval said. “I saw my teammates watching me and that was already sad. Every tournament, it gets a little more real – ‘Oh, wait. We have a week left before state’ really hits home.” And that’s a big one for Sandoval and fellow seniors Lindsay Lee and Abbey Anderson, who play their final high school tournament beginning Monday at the two-round UIL Class 5A state tournament at Legacy Hills Golf Course in Georgetown. The Mules are aiming for a third straight state championship and fourth in five years. Sandoval and Lee are the team’s only fourth-year letterwinners and are looking to get on the podium for a fourth time. Alamo Heights’ state run started with a state title in 2021 , followed by a runner-up finish in 2022 and then state crowns in 2023 and 2024. “It’s been the best four years of my life because of all the teammates that I’ve had and have now are like sisters to me,” said Lee, who is signed with Rollins College in Florida. “I’m just so glad I’ve had a chance to do this in high school and have one last chance at state. I’m also sad for it to be over.” The Mules return three from last year’s state title team with Lee, Sandoval and Anderson. Freshman Michelle Lee, Linsdey’s sister, and sophomore Syler Schones complete the team. Sophomore Chander Simons is the Mules’ alternate. Alamo Heights have maintained their momentum from last year despite the graduation of Julia Vollmer, a three-time Express-News Player of the Year who is now at Abilene Christian. The Mules also continued their dominance in Region IV-5A as they won their sixth straight title. Alamo Heights placed five golfers in the second through sixth spots and outlasted second place Pieper by 24 shots. At regionals, Sandoval finished second overall at 146, one shot behind Pieper freshman Dresden Bounds, who was a silver medalist at state last year. Michelle Lee was third, followed by Anderson, Schones and Lindsey Lee. As much as the Mules want to win a third straight title, they are trying to keep their focus on accomplishing as much as they can this season. “We can’t think about it and maybe turn the nerves or the pressure into a positive thing and be grateful that we’ve made it this far and that we get to be there for the third time, fourth time,” said Sandoval, who is signed with Incarnate Word. “I just stick to my routine every shot. I take a deep breath if I’m nervous and just do what I know how to do.” Anderson is making her second state appearance after moving to Alamo Heights prior to her junior season. She attended private school in Austin before coming to San Antonio and the enormity of making her state debut last year was a little daunting. “It’s very nerve-wracking first getting there,” said Anderson, who is signed with St. Mary’s. “As much as you try to convince yourself that’s it’s just like any other tournament, you can feel that it’s bigger regardless of how many different ways you try to make it seem less than.” While Lindsey Lee is a state-tournament veteran, the addition of her sister has an added dimension to her senior experience. “It my fourth time playing in the state championship, and every year it doesn’t get less exciting,” Lindsey Lee said. “It’s the same exact feeling. But this year, I’m mostly excited because it is my senior year, my sister is on the team and the love I have for my teammates.” It’s time for one more. “I’m trying to take advantage of the team that we have together because it’s so special to me, and yeah, the last one is going to be really special,” Sandoval said. “Hopefully, we’ll bring home the trophy.”
