Presidential food: That time San Antonio honored Jimmy Carter with a giant chalupa and a special taco

Typically, the council only bestows gifts to sitting presidents, but decided to throw its support behind Carter ahead of the election.San Antonio Tejano legend played at Jimmy Carter's inauguration nearly 50 years ago The council created a chalupa that included 10 pounds of refried beans, 10 heads of lettuce and five pounds of Georgia peanuts, in honor of Carter’s famed roots as a peanut farmer.

Unfortunately — or maybe fortunately for Carter’s digestive system — the huge chalupa never made it to the candidate. U.S. Rep. Henry B Gonzalez intended to deliver the food to Carter, but the connection was never made. Instead, the huge chalupa was eaten by a group of people who gathered outside the Alamo to attend a planned campaign stop by Carter, according to a report from the Express-News. The crowd “tore huge chunks from the giant chalupa,” according to the story.
