Secretary of State Wes Allen and former Republican Party Chairman John Wahl are running for lieutenant governor.

Wahl qualified to run for lieutenant governor late Friday afternoon, just before the qualifying deadline, and stepped down as state GOP chairman, as the party’s bylaws required.Allen, who has been campaigning for lieutenant governor“I’ve worked hard to make sure our state has the strictest voter ID laws in the country to protect our elections,” said Allen, who was elected secretary of state in 2022.

“My opponent, Nehemiah John Wahl, admitted he tried to vote using a homemade fake ID. We cannot be more different.“And just when you think you’ve seen it all, you see this. This is why elections matter.” Wahl responded by saying “Allen is frustrated by how the last few days have gone for his campaign, particularly after President Donald Trump endorsed me and the strong response to my entry into this race.” “However, I’m sorry he has chosen to respond with personal attacks and claims that simply aren’t true.”that Wahl had voted using an ID card that former state auditor Jim Zeigler helped him create.Wahl said then that Ziegler authorized the ID because Wahl needed it to do volunteer work for Zeigler after Zeigler was elected state auditor. The card has Wahl’s photo and the title “Regional Press Secretary” for “The Office of State Auditor.” Zeigler, now a candidate for Alabama Public Service Commission Place 2, on Sunday night said “the claim that the ID from the Auditor’s Office used by John Wahl was homemade or fake is simply false.” “I approved the ID as State Auditor, and it was professionally printed by a vendor — not homemade," Zeigler said. Zeigler said it was necessary because the auditor’s office “was badly understaffed and had no media person. We needed to email news releases.” “John Wahl a private citizen, generously agreed to send press releases at no cost. The e-mailing service would not allow anyone to send an email for a government office unless they had a news ID from that office. The press secretary ID served that purpose, and I heard nothing about this for many years,” Zeigler said Sunday. “Baseless political attacks like this do nothing to inform voters or improve our process. We should always stand for the truth and focus on the issues that actually matter to the people we serve.Former Secretary of State John Merrill has said the custom-made ID card was not a legal form of identification to vote under Alabama’s photo voter ID law. Merrill filed a complaint about Wahl’s use of the ID to the district attorney in Limestone County, where Wahl voted, and that was forwarded to Attorney General Steve Marshall,Whitmire also reported that when Allen became secretary of state in 2023, he forwarded a complaint about Wahl’s use of the ID to Marshall. In June 2024, Whitmire reported that Marshall did not respond to questions about the reports that the state Republican Party chairman had voted with an invalid ID. “My record on voter ID and election integrity as Chairman of the Alabama Republican Party is clear and well documented. I have consistently supported voter ID laws, worked to strengthen election integrity measures, and personally helped organize and deploy more than 200 trained poll watchers to Georgia to defend the integrity of the vote for President Trump in the last election,” Wahl said Sunday night. “I am proud to have President Trump’s endorsement and I am in complete agreement with his stand on voter ID. “This race should be about the issues, leadership, and earning the trust of the people — not rewriting history or tearing others down. I’m committed to running my own race, telling the truth about my record, and sharing with the people of Alabama where I stand on the issues and how I plan to make their lives better." Besides Allen and Wahl, other candidates for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor include Alabama Agriculture and Industries Commissioner
