The announcement of funding for improved safety comes a day after Miles announced multiple changes for their homecoming Saturday, Oct. 5.
) - New funding is on the way to help improve public safety at Miles College and the surrounding areas.
Miles President Dr. Bobbie Knight was joined by Alabama Rep. Terri Sewell Friday to announce that Sewell has secured $850,000 to increase multiple areas of the Miles campus. According to a news release, the money will be used to increase safety lighting on campus, procure upgraded safety systems, invest in broadband-enabled security devices, and purchase new safety vehicles.
“As our Birmingham community continues to grapple with the horrific impacts of gun violence, there is no better time to ensure that our students, faculty, and staff are safe and secure on campus. The $850,000 that we secured will help Miles College procure additional lighting, security equipment, and vehicles to provide for the safety of the entire campus community.
On Thursday, Oct. 3, the university said that everyone who would be on the campus of Miles Saturday was required to have a ticket, regardless if they were going to the Golden Bears football game or not. Kickoff for the game was also moved up by three hours.
