Alabama Power introduces SPEAR, a new predictive technology to minimize power outage times during storm seasons. The system analyzes historical data to forecast storm impacts and pre-position crews, aiming for faster restoration and more efficient resource allocation. The technology was tested during Winter Storm Fern with 85% accuracy.

AUBURN, Ala. - Alabama Power is preparing for the spring storm season with a new predictive technology designed to reduce power outage times and better position crews before storms hit. The system, called SPEAR — Storm Planning Estimated Time of Restoration and Reporting — can predict when, where, and how much impact a storm may have on power grids.

It uses 10 years of storm data to generate a five-day, hour-by-hour model identifying where the most trouble is expected.SPEAR was tested during Winter Storm Fern last month, achieving 85% accuracy and allowing Alabama Power to pre-position crews and resources ahead of the storm. Alabama Power Data Analytics Manager David Huffstutler said the technology gets critical information directly to field crews. “What it does is it puts information into the hands of the people who are gonna be in the field actually executing and getting some of these lights physically back on,” Huffstutler said. “When we’re able to pre-stage those crews it allows them to get to work faster, so you do expect to see a reduction in those outage times because of that pre-staging of resources.”According to Alabama Power, SPEAR is designed to benefit customers through faster power restoration, better communication, and more efficient use of resources.Prichard Police: 2 people shot, 1 dead on St. Stephens Road Saturday
