Alabama ordered to continue using updated congressional map

A federal court has come to a ruling regarding Alabama’s congressional map.

A three-judge panel in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama ruled Thursday that Alabama must use the congressional map that created a second majority-Black district. The ruling says the map should stay in place until regularly scheduled redistricting following the 2030 census.

The current map recently allowed Alabamians to elect a second Democrat, Shomari Figures, to the U.S. House of Representatives, when it was first used in the 2024 election cycle.Judges ruled in May that the state’s 2023 map violated the Voting Rights Act and ordered a new map be drawn that included a second majority-Black district be drawn. The court also denied a request to require any changes to the state’s map in the future be approved first by the U.S. Department of Justice in a process known as preclearance. The DOJ was opposed to such a requirement. “We are pleased that the Court accepted our arguments and rejected the plaintiffs’ far-reaching request‚" a spokesperson for the Alabama attorney general’s office said.
