All you need to know after the AHSAA separated private and public schools for championship play beginning in the fall.

This marks the first time in the 104-year history of the Alabama High School Athletic Association that all member schools won’t compete for championships together. Previously, public and private schools were pooled together in classifications and played for the same championship.

However, private schools were previously subject to rules that could bump teams to higher classifications based on success and championships. Now, private schools will play for their own championships. They are divided into two classifications, separate from public schools and now based only on enrollment.Yes, during the regular season, which may keep many of the state’s rivalries and newly-formed marquee matchups intact -- the “Battle for the Cannon” between Murphy and McGill-Toolen and a newfound rivalry between St. Michael and Jackson, for example.Public school Class 2A Pisgah is set to open the season against Randolph, a Double-A Private team, on Thursday, Aug. 20, while public school Class 4A Deshler will close the season against Single-A Private Mars Hill on Thursday, Oct. 29.largest private school classification — labeled Double-A Private separate championship play into Class 1A-4A, 5A and 6A for public schools and a single private-school class. Cross country will be in Class 1A-2A, 3A, 4A, 5A and 6A for public schools and a single classification for private schools. Swimming and diving will be in Class 1A-4A and 5A-6A for public schools and a single classification for private schools.With both public and private school classification assignments now determined by enrollment, classifications will be the same for all sports. However, area and region alignments will be different for each sport, depending on the number of teams in each area or region that play each sport. The winter and spring classifications will be released in the coming months.A separation of public and private schools in the state of Alabama has been a topic of discussion for years, but was brought into the spotlight The CHOOSE Act is a program in Alabama that allows families to use $7,000 of taxpayer money for private school tuition.to block the rule that students who transfer using those funds must sit out a year before competing in sports with an AHSAA school.Of the 15-member Central Board of Control, 13 of those voted in favor of executive director Heath Harmon’s reclassification recommendation for the 2026-2027 and 2027-2028 school years. The only two who voted against the decision wereIt’s very early and many decisions still have yet to be made on the playoffs, but the immediate concerns among private school officials stem from fair competition and future travel expenses.. “I just hope it was well thought out, well planned out from an administrative standpoint, and that this was not some kind of knee-jerk reaction; that’s my hope. “Past that, give us our rules, give us our parameters, give us the details that we need, and then let’s go to work. It is what it is and we’re going to go play wherever they tell us to go play.”The division between public and private schools as part of the AHSAA reclassification lasts for two years. After the two-year period, the AHSAA will evaluate and move forward ahead of the 2028-29 cycle.. “I think this is a great opportunity to provide more opportunities for our student-athletes. At the end of the day, this is a two-year deal. We want to hear from our member schools. We want to get feedback. In two years, who knows what happens, but I think this is a really good start, and I’m really excited about the future.”While reclassification is set for the next two years, there will be some evaluations coming from private school officials in the next couple of days. Private school leaders are expected to participate in a pre-planned conference call on Tuesday to discuss the reclassification and plans/options for the future. “I have no idea where we go from here,” Phillips said. “I think most of us are kind of in a wait-and-see mindset. We don’t have all the details yet. We don’t know how this is all going to play out.
