A bill to endorse President Donald Trump’s 2025 executive order changing the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America has been brought forth for the second year by state Rep. David Standridge, R-Hayden.all state and local entities and their employees would be required to use the term Gulf of America “in all newly created maps, documents, educational materials, websites, official communications, and other resources.”“It’s always an unknown in the legislature because other things happen, but I’m optimistic that there’s support for it,” he said. Standridge said he authored the bill in support of Trump’s executive order to rename the Gulf and to maintain consistency in federal and state materials as well as maintaining consistency with “I think the issue is important because there is some confusion, especially when you buy materials, there’s things that have to do with our parks and other documentation, maps and things like that,” he said. “And there’s some confusion about which one needs to be purchased, which name needs to be on the materials. And so, I think it’s just important to make that clear of what needs to be purchased so there’s not confusion about, one of the maps they pick up says Gulf of Mexico, and one says Gulf of America.” When previously asked by Sen. Merika Coleman, D-Montgomery, how much it would cost Alabama taxpayers for the state to update these materials Standridge said the number was “unknown.” He did not provide a number Wednesday but pointed out part of the bill which says state agencies and employees would not be required to update their materials if it would impose “an operational or financial burden.” HB2 also adds that public K-12 schools or other public institutions of higher education are not prohibited from using the term Gulf of Mexico “within a larger course of academic instruction when reasonable for historical purposes.”Heather Gann is a breaking news and Birmingham metro reporter for AL.com.
