Chris Evans' Captain America looking shocked in Captain America: Civil War
Captain America is one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's biggest heroes, and 2025 marked the definitive end of an era for the character in the franchise. Chris Evans' Steve Rogers has been with the MCU since 2011.
The actor's Captain America movies are held as the best MCU trilogy by many fans. With franchises like Spider-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy, that is no small feat. Evans' latest appearance in the MCU movie timeline as Captain America was in 2019's Avengers: Endgame. After years of claiming that he was done with the role, and even outright lying when asked about a 2026 project, Evans has now been confirmed as part of Avengers: Doomsday's cast. Despite his upcoming MCU return, 2025 has already marked the end of an era for Captain America. 2025 Started A New Captain America MCU Franchise Evans' first MCU solo movie was 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger. Then, he led 2014's The Winter Soldier, a grounded thriller that MCU movies and shows try to emulate to this day. Finally, Steve Rogers' Marvel trilogy ended with 2016's Civil War, where he put together a superhero team to fight Iron Man's team in his quest to defeat Zemo and save Bucky Barnes. With Steve passing on the Captain America shield to Sam Wilson in Avengers: Endgame, Anthony Mackie's hero took on the Captain America mantle in the MCU. After a Disney+ series set it up, Sam's first solo movie was released last year. Captain America: Brave New World spotlighted Sam as Cap and brought back multiple Hulk characters, using The Leader as its main villain and introducing Harrison Ford's Red Hulk. Sam Wilson's first Captain America movie marked the end of an era for Evans' Steve Rogers. The MCU now has a new Captain America, who is the main face of the hero's movie franchise. Additionally, Brave New World ended with Sam Wilson putting together a new Avengers team. As such, he is also replacing Steve's role as the leader of the MCU's main Avengers team. 2026 Could Already Set Up The Return To The MCU's Original Captain America Franchise While the first Avengers: Doomsday trailer made sure to say that"Steve Rogers" would return in the MCU movie, not calling Chris Evans' Marvel character Captain America, the door might not be permanently closed on Evans leading solo Captain America movies. The reason is simple: Brave New World underperformed, with Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige claiming its failure was due to being"the first without Chris Evans." After that box office run and Feige's comments, Evans is back as Steve Rogers in Avengers: Doomsday, with the Russo Brothers claiming his Captain America is central to the Avengers movie. All of this could lead to a new Captain America movie led by Evans, perhaps co-starring Mackie, or set up a new actor to play Steve Rogers after Avengers: Secret Wars, which soft reboots the MCU.
