Former state Rep. Gil Isbell filed a residency challenge based on Wahl's Tennessee driver's license.

can stay on the ballot for the lieutenant governor’s race after a state GOP committee rejected a challenge to his candidacy.who questioned whether Wahl met the requirement in the state constitution that the lieutenant governor live in the state seven years before the election.

In his complaint, Isbell noted that Wahl presented a Tennessee driver’s license in 2023 during a traffic stop in Morgan County.Wahl had the Tennessee license and had also been registered to vote in that state while serving as the state party chair in Alabama.“The notion that Mr. Wahl does not meet the ‘resident citizen’ requirement is downright ridiculous and not worth this committee’s valuable time,” Taylor wrote. “Mr. Wahl was born and raised in Alabama, has always lived in Alabama, has always voted in Alabama , has always paid his taxes in Alabama, and he served Alabama Republicans faithfully as chairman of this Party for almost 5 years. “Nobody has ever questioned his qualifications for that post. That’s because Mr. Wahl is undeniably a resident citizen of Alabama and has continuously been so since the day he was born. “People may—and often do—maintain more than one residence, and acquiring a second residence out of state does not necessarily mean that a person has renounced or abandoned his residency/citizenship in the first state.“ Wahl, a butterfly farmer from north Alabama, stepped down after five years as chairman of the state GOP to run for the office.“This challenge was plainly filed as a political hit job to discredit and disqualify my campaign,” Wahl said. “It mirrors the same tactics recently used against Senator Tommy Tuberville and reflects the broader pattern of political warfare we’ve seen directed at President Donald Trump. Voters saw through those attacks, and they will see through this one too.”Mike Cason has covered politics and state government for AL.com since 2013.
