Nursing Support Technicians (NSTs), much like their title suggests, are an important part of Alabama’s healthcare system.
The new credential for NSTs will bring around 16 different titles under one that is regulated for uniform education and training.DOTHAN, Ala. - The Alabama Board of Nursing announced a new Nursing Support Technician certification aimed at easing nurse burnout and creating a better pathway into the nursing profession.
“I think there is a total of 16 different job titles in hospitals and their job descriptions would be a little bit different and they work under delegation from a nurse, so it would sometimes be difficult to understand what this role can and can not do,“ Peggy Benson, the executive officer of the Alabama Board of Nursing, said.
“When you delegate, you are working under the license of the nurse, but now that they have their own permit they will be working under their own permitted function with their own scope of practice. They can do alot of the duties you don’t necessarily have to have a licensed nurse at the bedside do. It will really free them up to do what a nurse must do,” Benson said.
