Prayer in public schools was once thought of as a thing of the past, but a bill moving through the Alabama Legislature could soon change that.

) - Prayer in public schools was once thought of as a thing of the past, but a bill moving through the Alabama Legislature could soon change that.would allow student-led prayer to be conducted in Alabama public schools.

After passing the Alabama House by an overwhelming margin, the bill advanced to the Senate Education Policy Committee, where it received a unanimous favorable report. The sponsor, Rep. Reed Ingram, says the proposal would provide students with what he described as a healthy outlet. “This is a volunteer basis and the child, if they don’t want to hear it, they can step out of the classroom,” Ingram said. He says the bill would not require a permission slip, but would give students the option to leave and not participate during what he described as a one-minute prayer. The Rev. Julie Conrady of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Birmingham and Tuscaloosa said faith formation should remain with families and religious communities, not the state. “We believe that our faith communities should have the right to believe and teach our children as we want to, and that it is not the state’s position to be telling our children how to believe or what to believe,” Conrady said.“Imposing these bills would create a further hardship to our students of diverse religious beliefs in our state, and so it is essential that we protect their beliefs and their parents’ choice in making those decisions about which faith communities they are a part of and which doctrines they are exposed to,” she said. The legislation would also require schools to conduct the Pledge of Allegiance every day and give students the opportunity to voluntarily recite the pledge. The bill would allow alleged violations to be reported to the local superintendent of education.Crimson Tide star Aden Holloway suspended following drug arrestHouse passes sweeping utility reform; Bill heads to SenateSewell honors airmen killed in refueling plane crash over Iraq
