The city of Akron can continue to conceal the name of eight officers who shot and killed Jayland Walker in June 2022, the Ohio Supreme Court ruled.

Protesters hold signs demanding justice Jayland Walker who was shot to death by eight Akron police officers in June 2022. The city has never released the names of the officers. , the state’s high court said the city can withhold the names in records because they are still considered “uncharged suspects.” It is possible the officers could face federal charges, even though a Summit County grand jury declined to indict them, the court ruled.

Akron provided documents “to almost all the newspaper’s requests,” the court said. But the names of the eight officers were always redacted. “Specifically, the shooting was investigated by the Ohio attorney general and the case was presented to a grand jury, which declined to indict the officers,” the state’s justices wrote. “However, the grand jury’s decision not to indict does not foreclose a possible federal investigation.”

The state’s Supreme Court did not rule on whether those threats of violence could allow Akron to conceal the names of the eight officers who shot Walker. Those names, the justices argued, can already be redacted because they are uncharged suspects.
