An Air Force fighter pilot is currently hospitalized following the crash of an F-35 jet at Eielson Air Force Base in Fairbanks, Alaska . The incident occurred on Tuesday at 12:49 p.m. local time, resulting in 'significant aircraft damage,' as stated in a release from the Air Force base. The pilot, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, successfully ejected from the aircraft and was transported to Bassett Army Hospital for further medical evaluation.
The pilot is reported to be in stable condition.Colonel Paul Townsend, commander of the 354th Fighter Wing, emphasized the importance of personnel safety and security, stating, 'Our people are our most important resource, and we are committed to ensuring their safety and security.' Townsend assured that the base would take measures to prevent similar incidents in the future, adding, 'I can assure you the United States Air Force will conduct a thorough investigation in hopes to minimize the chances of such occurrences from happening again.'During a press conference, Townsend explained that it was 'premature' to speculate on the cause of the crash. However, he noted that the pilot was adhering to standard procedures when an 'in-flight malfunction' occurred. Townsend affirmed the base's confidence in the capabilities of the F-35 aircraft. The jet was engaged in a local training exercise when an in-flight emergency was declared. The impact site is confirmed to be within the base perimeter. The base warned local residents near the base to refrain from stopping, as it impedes recovery efforts. Additionally, federal law prohibits photography along the highway. A base spokesperson informed Fox News Digital that they are actively working to gather more information and the investigation is ongoing. The F-35 fighter jet is estimated to cost approximately $80 million, according to Air & Space Forces Magazine
