The areas of state government that will be cut will be the battle during the next five months, as the General Assembly creates and passes the two-year government operations budget bill.
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Nearly a third of Ohio schools this year are receiving additional state aid that Gov. Mike DeWine has proposed trimming as part of an education funding plan in his two-year state budget.
But DeWine wants to cut the guarantee by nearly $14.3 million, or 5% of current state levels of $285 million, in the next school year, he announced Monday in submitting his proposed budget to the Ohio General Assembly. His budget calls for further reducing it by $28.5 million, or 10%, in the 2025-2026 school year.in the next two years compared to the last couple of budgets, as the state won’t have COVID-19 relief cash that boosted recent budgets and lower-than projected tax receipts.
The number of school districts on the guarantee increased from 153 in the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2024, to 187 this current year. -An increase in school district property values from county reappraisals, which creates a countervailing effect of them losing state funds; Fleeter, who has observed state school funding since the 1990s, said he was surprised to hear DeWine attribute increases in the guarantee to enrollment declines.
