Abortion rights advocates and opponents agree that Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's lawsuit against a New York doctor is just one step in the abortion...

The lawsuit is meant to “test the waters” of what is legally permissible against medical providers who help Texans get abortions. In this file photo, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton was seen giving remarks to republican delegates from Texas on the first day of the Texas GOP Convention on May 23, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas.is one step in a longer battle against people who facilitate abortions for Texans, according to both abortion advocates and opponents.

“This is indicative of an intention of Texas to enforce its laws beyond the edges of Texas territory,” said Molly Meegan, the chief legal officer for New York State Attorney General Letitia James has lashed out at Paxton and affirmed the state’s intent to protect doctors. Seago, of Texas Right to Life, also said the coming months will bring another, related type of lawsuit. He expects to see wrongful death lawsuits, specifically brought by the partners or former partners of women who have had abortions. These lawsuits would be filed against abortion providers, and people who helped others illegally terminate pregnancies, Seago argued — but not against the women who had the abortions.

Plaintiffs Dr. Austin Dennard, an OB-GYN, with her son, and Lauren Miller, of Dallas, along with others exit the chambers of the Texas Supreme Court after oral arguments in the abortion rights challenge, Zurawski v Texas, filed by 20 women and two OB-GYNs, Tuesday, November 28, 2023, in Austin, Texas.
